Russia no longer supplies rocket engines to US

The Russian space agency Roscosmos said on Thursday it would no longer sell rocket engines to the United States, Reuters writes . With this, the organization is responding to sanctions imposed by the US against Russia because of the war in Ukraine.

While the decision won’t directly affect many US launches, it could affect how supplies are sent to the International Space Station.

“We have decided not to supply rocket engines from NPO Energomash to the United States for the time being,” said Roscosmos director Dmitry Rogozin. “These deliveries have been pretty intense since the mid-1990s. Let them fly with something else. Their broomsticks, I don’t know what.”

According to Rogozin, 122 rocket engines have been shipped from Russia to the United States since the 1990s. Of these, 98 have been used to power Atlas missiles.

The director also says that the space agency no longer provides technical assistance to missiles that have previously been delivered to the US. As a result, 24 engines would currently be without support. It is unknown exactly what the consequences will be for the United States.

British satellite company does not agree to Russian demands

The war in Ukraine also affects space travel. Earlier, Roscosmos demanded that the British satellite company OneWeb had to meet its conditions, otherwise internet satellites would not be launched this week.

OneWeb uses Russian missiles for its equipment, which must provide internet from low Earth orbit.

Russia wanted, among other things, that the United Kingdom would sell its share in OneWeb. Roscosmos also wanted a guarantee that the satellites would not be used for military purposes.

The British did not comply with the demands , as a result of which the launch of the satellites did not go ahead.
