The young woman is hospitalized at the State Center for Rehabilitation and Readaptation Dr. Henrique Santillo (Crer) in Goiana, Goiás, and had returned to the ICU on April 9 after presenting with pneumonia and a drop in blood pressure. “She’s been awake most of the time. She can look at us, she can already move her head. She wants to talk. I even get emotional”, said Adriana.

Thais was transferred to Crer to start the rehabilitation process after being diagnosed with cerebral edema and irreversible damage to the brain when she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Anápolis, where she was rescued after the first symptoms of the strong allergic reaction. Before that, she had passed through the Sanitary Dermatology Hospital (HDS) to treat a new infection.

The episode took place on February 17th when Thais Medeiros started to feel sick after smelling a jar of pickled pepper during family lunch. According to the young woman’s daughter-in-law, Sandra, she was having lunch normally when she decided to smell the pepper preserves, a recipe that her mother is used to making.

“She didn’t taste it, she just smelled it. As soon as she smelled the pepper, she already said that she was scratching her throat. I dropped my plate and went after her. It wasn’t 3 minutes”, said Sandra.

“She went into the bathroom, then went to the bedroom, took the asthma inhaler and a pill. I ran down with her and we went to the hospital”, said Matheus, Thais’ boyfriend.

According to Thais’ mother, despite the young woman having asthma, bronchitis and a history of allergies, the reaction to pepper was astonishing for everyone, as it was the first time that she had symptoms of allergy to the food. After the diagnosis of the brain injury, Adriana had a kitty online for those who want to help with donations.
