Destroy All Humans 2  – The discussion around what is a remaster or a remake and how to evaluate each one will be eternal. Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed, is one more to add fuel to this fire, as it brings super modern graphics to a game from the PS2 era, but without any change in its base structure, with its biggest defects still evident.

Destroy All Humans 2

Graphics are the highlight Destroy All Humans 2
Launched only for the new generation, the visuals are quite attention-grabbing. Crypto, the alien protagonist of the game, has an incredibly detailed model, full of high resolution textures and interactions with the scene lights. His weapons received the same treatment and have several cool effects when used. The locations that Crypto visits in Destroy All Humans 2 are small open worlds in various locations around the globe. United States, United Kingdom and Japan are some examples. Although the structure is very simple and with little to do besides causing chaos with your ship and weapons, the highlight is the visual part. Each location has been carefully redone using modern technologies, such as realistic lighting, high human density, transiting vehicles, and effects that draw attention when massive destruction of buildings takes place in combat, making the experience very satisfying. The animations did not follow this visual part as much, since they are still being made without motion capture and with little detail in the facial expressions. In the dialogues between the characters this is very evident and even the most stylized aspect of the artistic direction helps to hide the plastic doll aspect of everyone involved in the story. Even so, it’s a small matter compared to the visual improvements, which greatly enhance a remaster. defects continue Destroy All Humans 2
If, on the one hand, the visual part received considerable improvements that adapted the game to modern times, on the other hand, the gameplay and story remain stagnant in the early 2000s, and it is worth remembering that this was already a very moderate continuation. Compared to the first game in the series, it evolved very little and made only a few additions or changes to locations around the globe for Crypto to continue doing the same things. The loop is still fun. Wreaking havoc with your ship, improving your arsenal and frantically collecting brains remains interesting in the early hours. Over time, the game ends up losing gas, since the missions are extremely repetitive and focused only on combat. Without much challenge, since the game is very easy even in the most difficult modes, those who have played the previous one will end up not wanting to continue, unless they want to complete the extra mission challenges. Perhaps if they had limited some more skills or increased the number of more powerful enemies in combat, such as those with a shield, the experience would have been more challenging and the combat less repetitive because it required more variation. The story also seems pretty dated. Right at the opening of the game, the developers already warn that the plot was originally made for another time and nothing has been modified, which may not please people who were born and raised in the present day. Although the main reason for the warning is the presence of jokes currently considered offensive and the sexualization of some characters, what weighs most are the references that have been lost in time, which will not make sense to younger people. There are several jokes with artists and personalities of the time at specific times, for example, that many people don’t even remember anymore. In the end, there are few situations in which a smile appears in a game focused on humor, which is a tremendous disappointment. Conclusion Destroy All Humans 2
Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed is a competent remaster and brings the game’s visuals into modern times with a beautiful release for next-gen consoles and PC, but that’s not enough. While still fun at times, the source material already had little new from its predecessor, with its story and gameplay getting dated. The repetition and the lack of challenge soon tire and this ends up being just an uncommitted pastime for those who already liked the series a lot and missed it. pros
  • Completely redone graphics, which look beautiful even compared to current games
  • Weapons and abilities are still fun to use
cons
  • Lack of challenge and combat repetition makes the game tiresome
  • Most of the jokes and references no longer make much sense.
  • Few options for activities in the cities
Grade: 7.0/10.0
