Draw puts Brazil in the same group as Spain, current champions of the Basketball World Cup

After the draw, Gustavo De Conti, coach of the Brazilian national team, highlighted the strength of Brazil’s group with the presence of the current champion, in addition to two teams with their growing basketball. In addition to an eventual second phase having to face the countries of group H.

“First, the focus is on the first phase, where we have to concentrate, and work to advance to the next phase. Think one thing at a time. But we don’t have to choose. We are in a World Cup. Only the best teams in the world”, pondered the technician.

To carry out the draw, FIBA ​​considered the latest world ranking of teams and distributed countries in pots. Brazil was placed in pot 3 along with Germany, Greece and Italy. As geographic criteria were also considered, it was not possible for two teams from the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania to be in the same group. And for European teams, only two in each group were allowed.

Brazil can guarantee a place for the 2024 Olympic Games, in Paris, France, if it manages to guarantee at least the second best campaign in the Americas in this year’s edition of the World Cup. The other teams that are in the competition as representatives of the Americas are: United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Dominican Republic.

The two best teams in each group advance to the second phase, with their points acquired in the initial phase and crossing with two other classified selections from another group. At the end of the second phase, the two best teams go to the quarterfinals.
