In search of renewable energy, Germany closes the country’s last nuclear power plants

This Saturday (15), Germany began to close its last three nuclear power plants. Around midnight all will be disabled in the country. Decision came from the program to get better results from renewable energy. This agreement had been approved decades ago, but the Federal Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, succeeded in running the plants until April of this year, witho preventive way to a possible energy crisis during the winter.

The shutdown of the Emsland, Neckarwestheim II and Isar II reactors will end a period of protest in Europe, from environmental groups. The estimate is that the country will have completely renewable electricity by 2035. According to authorities, the three plants that were in operation will contribute with only 6% of electricity generation in Germany, in comparison, 44% of energy sources in 2022 were renewable.

A study done by forsa institute, shows that not the entire population of the country approved the closure of the plants. Only about 28% supported total subtraction. There were requests not to shut down the reactors, but they were all unsuccessful. Some conservative politicians in the country also criticized the decision, aiming to be only for internal political interests and to benefit state elections.

The government started the creation of new liquefied gas points in the north of the country for the expansion of renewable energy. Other fonts must also be installed by Germany.

The decision to close the last nuclear power plants, came into debate after the various protests against nuclear weapons that attacked the population in Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima. Experts say that the use of this technology is unsafe and unsustainable.
