Understand the growth of “gray divorce”

“Grey Divorce” is a time that is becoming quite popular, especially on the internet. He deals with the divorce of people aged 60 and over.

The rise of the term is also reflected in the increase in the number of divorces of older people.

According to experts, the increase in the number of divorced people over 65 is due to several factors. Among them are the normalization of divorce and the increase in life expectancy, with the increase in life expectancy by at least two decades, people are no longer seeing any reason to stay in a situation where they are no longer happy.

The study by American researcher Susan L. Brown points out that divorce among people over 65 years old doubled between 1990 and 2010. In Brazil, in 2021, the number of people over 50 years old is equivalent to 25.9% of the total number of divorced in the country, with an average of 43.6 years among divorced men and 40.6 years for women, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics surveyed by the BBC.

Other countries also showed an increase in the number of divorced people over 50 years of age. Mexico had a 168% increase between 2011 and 2021. Spain had a 38% increase between 2013 and 2021.

One of the examples is Mexican Aída Senado. Aída got married at age 24, divorced at age 65, and at age 74 began using the TikTok to talk about your experience and to help others who are going through the same scenario.

In a part of one of her videos on TikToks, she says:

“Take care of putting what you want on the market because, for example, if I wanted a melon, (and received as a response) ‘what do you want a melon for? I don’t like’.

And now that I come to the market I can pick oranges, apples and eat what I want, I’m happy.

The truth is that it was very difficult for my age, after being married for so many years, to leave marriage, but look at where I am now. I can walk the halls as long as I want. I can get tomatoes, apples, juices, whatever I want to have.

I no longer have anyone who tells me: ‘do this, don’t do that, sit down’”.
