Tom Holland opens up about mental health and reveals he has been sober for over a year

Like many movie stars, Tom Holland has admitted to being positively influenced by one of the most challenging roles of his career. In an interview with Entertainment Weeklythe actor told how to star in the new Apple TV+ series, “among strangers”, helped him with his decision to pursue sobriety and take care of his mental health.

In the production, based on the biographical book “The Minds Of Billy Milligan” by Daniel Keyes, the British interprets Billy Milligan himself, a young man arrested after a shooting, who later became the first person to be acquitted of a crime for the diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder.

“Learning about mental health and the power of it, and talking to psychiatrists about the struggles (of the characters) Danny and Billy has been a very informative thing for my own life.”, confessed Holland. While he would not reveal which substance he is trying to avoid, he said he had been sober for a year and four months and was able to recognize addiction-related stressors, such as social media.

With the release of the anthology series, Tom hopes viewers will show more respect and empathy for people struggling with mental health issues: “I hope people feel informed about the powers of mental health, hardship, and our incredible abilities to survive.”, he highlighted.

“I was seeing myself in him, but in my personal life. I remember having a little meltdown at home and thinking, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character’. And obviously we were in the middle of filming so I decided not to do that… It was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before.“, he said.
