Queen Elizabeth died – The British Queen Elizabeth has died at the age of 96. Earlier today, the British royal family announced that the queen’s health had deteriorated. The Queen passed away peacefully this afternoon in the presence of her family in the Scottish castle Balmoral.

Britain’s King Charles, who succeeds his mother, and Queen Consort Camilla remain at Balmoral Castle for another night after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. They will return to London on Friday.

Elizabeth sat on the throne for a total of seventy years and would celebrate her anniversary later this year. She became Queen on February 6, 1952, after her father George died at the age of 57. At that time she was already married to Philip.

The very dutiful Elizabeth had her hands full with the heavy kingship. The United Kingdom was in the midst of transforming from an empire into a Commonwealth.

Her direct influence as a queen was basically limited. But Elizabeth regularly made her own opinion clear between the lines. For example, after the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990, she was one of the first heads of state to invite him. In this way, she implicitly expressed her support for his struggle.

Queen was never out of the running for long

Despite her strong health, the Queen has since been out of circulation occasionally due to minor medical procedures such as knee surgery, a strained back muscle or an intestinal infection. This hardly hindered the queen in her functioning. She was never out of the running for long periods of time.

Because of her old age and increasing health problems, rumors swelled that Elizabeth wanted to abdicate. In 2012, she denied that. “My life will continue to serve the British people in the coming years and I look forward to the future with a clear head and a warm heart.”

April 2021 was a low point for Queen Elizabeth: her husband Philip died at the age of 99. “His familiar smile will be missed,” she said in her annual Christmas address.

Elizabeth’s remarkable life over the past fifteen years provided much material for films, series and plays, which unmistakably contributed to her undiminished popularity. In 2016, Netflix launched the critically acclaimed series The Crown, in which the lives of the queen and the other Windsors are meticulously reconstructed.
