Colombia coal mine
Eleven people have been killed in an explosion at a coal mine in the Colombian province of Boyaca. Four people are still missing. The national mining agency (ANM) announced this on Sunday.
The accident in the municipality of Tasco happened Saturday evening. The cause was an accumulation of methane gas in the mine.
The Colombian mining industry includes huge projects carried out by large multinationals as well as hundreds of small informal companies.

Accidents are common because some businesses are illegal, which means that security measures are not followed well enough. However, that is not the case for the mine in Tasco where eleven people died on Saturday evening, according to the ANM.
Rescue workers fear that the four missing persons were also killed in the explosion.
In 2021 Colombia had 128 mining accidents, killing a total of 148. There have been 19 accidents so far this year, resulting in 36 deaths.
