Hungary can’t hold surprising lead

France started the game as the big favourite and also got the first chance on the opening goal. A long-range shot from Karim Benzema was turned over by Péter Gulácsi, but the rebound came at griezmann’s feet. The FC Barcelona striker had the ball before firing in, but shot straight at the Hungarian goalkeeper.

After Benzema had shot a promising volley alongside, Hungary surprisingly took the lead just before half-time. After a good combination, Fiola walked out of Benjamin Pavard’s back on the left and then moved the ball into the short corner: 1-0.

France also struggled after half-time with Hungary, who pulled away further on their own half. After an hour of play, substitute Ousmane Dembélé banged the post. The equaliser fell midway through the second half: Griezmann shot from close range after Willi Orbán had not completed a Dembélé cross well.

The French had 20 minutes left to put the winning goal on the scoreboard. Kylian Mbappé had the best chances at that 1-2, but he first volleyed the ball out of the turn and shot hard at goalkeeper Gulácsi’s fists in the closing stages, making it 1-1.
