Barcelona president on Koeman: ‘Intention is to respect his contract’
Barcelona president on Koeman: FC Barcelona chairman Joan Laporta hinted on Monday that a longer stay of manager Ronald Koeman at the Camp Nou is definitely in the works.
According to the president, the evaluation interviews are moving in the right direction.
The 58-year-old Koeman had an initial meeting with Laporta on Tuesday, who indicated on Friday that the former Dutch national coach will be given a decision on his future this week.
“We went into an evaluation period with Ronald to see what went well and what didn’t go well. And because he is a coach who has not been appointed under my rule, we have to look at the extent to which we feel the same about Barcelona,” Laporta said at the press presentation of new recruit Sergio Agüero on Monday. “We would see each other again in seven to ten days, but there is continuous contact. The intention is to respect his contract. For the time being, the talks are going well, although the period of reflection was necessary for a while.”
Laporta wants to change things at Barcelona, with it still uncertain whether there is room for Koeman, despite a contract until mid-2022. The chairman reportedly prefers to see another coach come, although he has not spoken out about it. (Barcelona president on Koeman)
According to Laporta, Koeman is involved in the arrival of Agüero, who was brought in on a free transfer after his ten-year contract with Manchester City expired. “We have been in constant contact with Ronald about Agüero. He is very happy with the arrival of one of the best strikers in the world.”
Agüero himself indicated at his presentation that he had not yet spoken to Koeman. “Do I know if he will still be a coach here next season? That’s not my business. The club will make the best possible decision.”
Barcelona finished third behind Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid in their first season with Koeman as manager. Midfielder Frenkie de Jong’s club did win the Copa del Rey.
