Man runs over, kills eight people in Texas

In the midst of a car accident, at least eight people died this Sunday (07), in Brownsville, Texas.

A man was taken into custody, suspected of being the driver of the vehicle, according to local television channels. The accident took place around 8:30 am local time near the Ozanam Center, a shelter for migrants and the homeless, according to affiliated broadcasters. CBS 4 It is NBC 23.

Lieutenant Martin Sandoval of the Brownsville Police Department said in a press conference that migrants are among the victims: “We are investigating the forms of intoxication to see if he was intoxicated at the time of the accident”, revealed Sandoval, referring to the Ozanam Center as a shelter for homeless people. There were also injuries in the accident.

There is a video circulating on the internet that supposedly is about this accident. In the footage, it is possible to see the SUV-type vehicle at high speed, running over a group of people who are sitting on the sidewalk. In another video, people appear, who would be victims of this hit-and-run. Some appear bloodied, writhing, and others appear to be immobile. However, the authenticity of the images has not yet been confirmed.

As declared to AFP through a witness, before accelerating the vehicle over the victims, the driver even shouted numerous insults at the group that was on the sidewalk at that time.

Martin Sandoval reported that: “We received a call about a gray SUV that ran a red light and ran over several people. We confirm that seven people died and others were taken to the hospital”. Later, it was confirmed that one more person died in the hospital, raising that number to eight fatalities. The police also said that the group was waiting at a bus stop when they were hit by the vehicle. The driver was subsequently detained, remaining in custody and taken to hospital for multiple injuries. He will be charged with dangerous driving, however, he could face other charges.

The city of Brownsville is located on the border of the United States with Mexico and expects that, starting next Thursday (11), there will be an increase in migrants, the date on which the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic expire.
