Vegetable oils help maintain skin hydration in the cold

With the arrival of fall, it is expected that the skin becomes drier and less lush, as the characteristics of the cold and dry seasons are reflected in the outermost layers of the skin, when it becomes visibly less hydrated. Less hydrated skin is related, for example, to allergies, peeling and even wrinkles.

Skin hydration is related to its ability to retain water. One of the elements involved in this process is located in the outermost layer of the epidermis, in the stratum corneum, where dead cells exist, united by an oily surface, also called the hydrolipidic mantle. This cover, formed by dead cells, natural oils, water and mineral salts eliminated through sweating, forms an occlusive layer that, in addition to protecting against pathogens, prevents dehydration.

The glow of a lush skin is just the reflection of this complex structure that protects the organism, while also being associated with beauty. Having the benefits of hydrated skin need not be a concern, as a healthy lifestyle keeps the process happening naturally. However, autumn and winter can indeed make the skin less hydrated, both due to the cold and dry climate and the habits of that time, hot baths and less water intake.

Body oils are a way to enhance and even mimic that occlusive cloak that will protect the skin against dehydration. They are practical and are used in different ways, according to the type of skin and routine. Bath oils, which usually have a mixture of vegetable and mineral oils, are applied at the end of the bath and then rinsed. The result is an oily residue that keeps the look fresh for longer.

In addition, there are more natural options, such as using 100% pure vegetable oils. They can be applied along with the moisturizer or not, associated with massage and even essential oils, which are part of other ways to intensify skin care.
