Argentina will host the U-20 World Cup

A FIFA announced this Monday (17) the Argentina as the host country for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup. A International Football Federation announced on March 29 the withdrawal of Indonesia as host nation of the competition, as the entity claimed that the Asian country was not prepared to host the tournament.

“FIFA is pleased to announce that this year’s edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 will be held in Argentina, so that the country of current world champions will open its doors to the big stars of tomorrow’s world football. I want to thank the AFA and in particular its president, Claudio Tapia, as well as the government authorities, for their commitment to hosting this great event in such a short period of time.”said the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantinoin a statement on the official website.

With the change of host country, Argentina, which had not qualified for the competition, will now participate occupying the place that previously belonged to Indonesia. This will be the second time that Argentina will host the competition, the first time was in 2001 and, on that occasion, Argentina was the champion of the tournament.

The Argentine team is the biggest world champion in the category, having won the title six times: 1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2007. Brazil is second with five titles won, being won in 1983, 1985, 1993 , 2003 and 2011.

The draw to define the clashes of the competition will be held next Friday (21). The competition will be organized into six groups and each group will consist of four teams, the top two in each group will advance to the next stage.
