According to Climatempo, an extratropical cyclone occurs in an area of low atmospheric pressure and is composed of large temperature variations, which is what the gauchos have been experiencing in recent days. Meteorologist Josélia Pegorim explains that the winds rotate in a complete circle, clockwise in the southern hemisphere, and that their formation process, close to the continent, can cause many direct hours of rain. Its large accumulations can generate floods, soil soaking and landslides.

In São Leopoldo, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, the accumulated precipitation reached 200 millimeters in the last 24 hours.
