New lawn of Independência is inaugurated for the game between Cruzeiro and São Paulo

This Saturday, at 9 pm, Cruzeiro and São Paulo will face each other at the Independência stadium, marking the “inauguration” of the new pitch. The site underwent a period of 20 days of maintenance, during which adjustments were made in the field. América-MG, which manages the stadium, published pictures of the grass this Friday.

During the maintenance process, Independência’s operations and safety manager, Helber Gurgel, explained that there was no complete replacement of the lawn, only a recomposition with two types of grass, in order to guarantee its durability in the midst of low temperatures. In the summer, the stadium’s original floor is used, while in the winter it is replanted with a specific grass for that season.

Cruzeiro has a contract with América-MG to play its games at Independência until the end of the year, but has also reached an agreement with Mineirão to use the stadium on dates available on the local calendar.

It is worth noting that, due to the situation on the field, two games were rescheduled for Independência in the last 30 days. On May 22, Cruzeiro sent the match against Cuiabá in Sete Lagoas, due to the sequence of games at the Belo Horizonte stadium. On June 11, with Independência closed, América-MG sent the game against Athletico-PR at Mineirão.

The pitch at Estádio Mineirão has faced recent criticism, especially from Cruzeiro and Atlético-MG. Minas Arena, the company responsible for managing the stadium, recognized the need to make improvements in light of these concerns. Committed to offering a quality field, Minas Arena is taking measures to solve the problem.

Although they are aware of the criticism, Minas Arena is working to minimize negative impacts on the pitch. They are making changes to scheduled events at the stadium in order to preserve the quality of the playing field. However, it is important to mention that there are at least two more events scheduled to take place on the lawn, one at the end of July and another in November.

The company is committed to balancing the needs of scheduled events with turf conservation. Therefore, they are adopting extra maintenance and care measures, aiming to restore the ideal condition of the course after each event. In this way, they hope to ensure that the pitch is in good condition for subsequent football matches.
