Games of the month on PlayStation – At the end of the month, AFRILATEST discusses the most important new games. With this time Callisto Protocol, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Chained Echoes and Vampire Survivors.

Callisto Protocol

  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC
  • Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Game designer Glen Schofield became world famous in 2008 with his horror game Dead Space, in which you had to explore a bloody, abandoned space colony, while being hunted by all kinds of monsters. A game clearly inspired by the Alien movies, which had enough of its own face to captivate millions of people.

With The Callisto Protocol, Schofield tries to do that trick again. This time you play as Jacob Lee, who has to fend off a kind of space zombies in a space prison. A setup that is very reminiscent of Dead Space. Also game technically a lot is the same as that previous game. (Games of the month on PlayStation)

You shoot your way through the prison and get new weapons along the way. That works nicely, but in fact Callisto Protocol does little that we did not see in 2008. As a result, Callisto Protocol only feels like a nice horror game.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, Nintendo Switch.
  • Score: 4 out of 5 stars

The creators of the Xcom strategy games were allowed to make a Marvel game. Also in this game, you fight alternately while controlling a team of heroes from above, but the Marvel variant feels a bit more streamlined and has less randomness. That also makes the game a bit simpler, but it never gets too easy.

You play a self-made hero, who is awakened to defeat an ancient villain. You lead a team of well-known superheroes from a secret base – a story that mainly serves as an excuse to bring together every popular Marvel character. You can strike up conversations and bond with almost any hero in your home. That does ensure that you are talking a lot in the beginning. best Games of the month on PlayStation

But once the game gets going and gets you more into battle, it’s an extremely fun to sink your teeth into it.

In seven years, this Japanese-looking role-playing game was created by one German developer. The result is a homage to old classics that appeared for the Super Nintendo – and a game that far surpasses the genre peers.

You’ll lead a group of eight adventurers who try to discover how a mysterious superweapon blew up an entire country. A story that seems simple at first, but is extremely well written. It is extra striking that the game was made by one person: the story has a kind of authorship that you do not see in larger productions. (Games of the month on PlayStation)

Battles take place in turn, just like in classic role-playing games. Unique is that between battles you get all your life and technique points back, and thus enter into every fight at full strength. This has been taken into account when designing the game, which means that you have to be on your guard with every opponent. Ramming unsuspectingly on A until an enemy dies is rare – you have to do your best to kill even simple monsters.

There is no question of old-fashioned level growth. Instead, after boss fights and other important moments, you get points that you can invest in your characters, choosing what they get better at. In addition, the game world is full of optional bosses and upgrades. The result is an extraordinarily good game, which surpasses other role-playing games of this year.

Vampire Survivors

  • Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series, iOS, Android
  • Score: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The simple-looking Vampire Survivors was already a hit on the PC and Xbox, but has also appeared as a free smartphone game this month. The idea behind this is dead simple: walk around with your character who attacks automatically, while collecting upgrades and killing ever larger groups of monsters.

It doesn’t take long for your screen to be filled with hundreds of enemies at once, but at the same time your upgrades will make you a kind of killing machine. And the deeper you dive into the game, the more new weapons you unlock and the more complicated it all gets.

It’s a game full of secrets. Every time you think you know how everything works, a totally new game mechanic is added. It gives a huge kick, which kept us hooked for evenings.
