Government repudiates racist attacks on Vini Jr. and demands action from the Spanish authorities

The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) published this Monday (22) a note repudiating “in the strongest terms” the case of racism involving the Brazilian footballer Vini Jr., from Real Madrid, in games of the Spanish championship La Liga. The text was signed by the Ministries of Racial Equality, Justice and Public Security, Foreign Affairs, Sports, and Human Rights and Citizenship.

In the communiqué, the Brazilian government “deeply regrets” the lack of effective measures to prevent and prevent the repetition of racist acts. The note also asks that the government and sports authorities in Spain, as well as FIFA and the League, take the necessary measures to prevent new cases of racism and punish the culprits.

According to the blog of journalist Andréia Sadi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should also talk to the Spanish ambassador in Brazil, Maria Fernández-Palacios, in search of explanations and to express the position of the Brazilian government’s demands on the case.

Vini Jr. was the target of racism during Real Madrid’s match against Valencia last Sunday (21). On May 10, Spain and Brazil signed a bilateral agreement to combat xenophobia and racism.
