Netflix sharing account: users in few countries to pay for sharing account

Netflix sharing account – Netflix is going to test a feature in a number of countries that allows users to add an extra address to their account. For that they have to add money. The streaming service hopes to earn something from the people who share a subscription with a subscriber to save costs.

The test will start next month in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. It is not known how long the trial period lasts and whether the function will also come to other countries afterwards.

All subscribers can add one additional home address without paying extra. With a Basic subscription it is possible to add an additional address for a fee, with a Standard subscription two addresses and with a Premium subscription three addresses. For this, users pay $ 2.99 (2.92 euros) per added address on top of their monthly fee.

Netflix will use information such as IP addresses and device numbers to see if accounts are permanently used by multiple households. During travel, the streaming service can still be used on laptops, tablets and phones.

Netflix says that sharing accounts on a large scale makes it impossible in the long run to continue investing in the service and improving it. It’s not the first time the company has conducted a test to restrict account sharing.

Looking for more paying subscribers

For the time being, sharing is tolerated in the Netherlands. Netflix founder Reed Hastings said in 2016 that this is “something we have to learn to live with”. That attitude changed three years later, when CEO Greg Peters said that Netflix is looking for solutions.

The company recently announced that it had lost subscribers for the first time in ten years. This week, the video service is expected to announce that it has lost two million paying members in the past quarter.
