Ronaldo lead Portugal to Victory
Cristiano Ronaldo and reigning European champion Portugal started the European Championship on Tuesday with a late 0-3 win over Hungary. The evening got an extra charge for Ronaldo, because the vedette is two special records richer.
All three goals fell in the final minutes. First Borussia Dortmund player Raphaël Guerreiro finished with some luck, then Ronaldo shot from a penalty and not much later he also set the score.
The first of Ronaldo’s two hits was a special one: he leaves Michel Platini behind and is now the european championship top scorer of all time with eleven goals. The 36-year-old Portuguese is also the first to play at five European Championships. (Ronaldo lead Portugal to Victory)
The match, in which Portugal had a very difficult time with the Hungarians and seemed to be heading for a long loss of points, was played in front of some 50,000 spectators in the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. No other European Championship stadium welcomes so many fans.
Hungarian supporters were allowed in if they had been vaccinated at least once or have already been infected with the coronavirus. Foreign fans had to show a negative corona test.
In the strong Group F, world champions France and Germany face each other later in the evening. Kick-off is at 9pm at The Allianz Arena in Munich.

As defending champion, Portugal was the big favourite in budapest’s hungarian-filled stadium on Tuesday. The southern Europeans were also the better ones, although fierce Hungary gave nothing as a gift.
Ronaldo – he found goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi on his way and shot over in a very promising position – and Diogo Jota (also here saved Gulácsi) were dangerous for the Portuguese before half-time. At the other end, Ádám Szalai missed a chance at 1-0.
In the second half, the picture of play remained the same: Hungary mainly defended and lurked on a counterattack. That tactic seemed to be successful ten minutes before time, but a hit from the deep-sent Szabolcs Schön was disallowed for offside.
It looked as if Portugal had been woken up, as the important victory was still won in the final minutes. First Guerreiro got the ball at his feet with fortune and rounded off with luck and then ronaldo spoke.
Knowing that he already had the record of playing time at five European Championships, he did not fail with a deservedly awarded penalty. The star player completed the evening by scoring again from close range just before time.
