Eurovision 2022

Now that Kalush Orchestra, the potential winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, is busy with volunteering and work for the territorial forces in homeland Ukraine, the question arises whether the band can participate at all. The organization of the Song Contest is also prepared for possible cancellations this year, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) reports to Afrilatest: every participant must record the performance in their own country.

All participating countries – 40 this year – have been asked to record another so-called live on tape , says the EBU. Those tapes were introduced in 2021 after the Eurovision Song Contest was canceled a year earlier due to the corona virus.

These recordings ensure that every artist can participate, even in the event of failure due to a corona infection.

For Ukraine, the live on tape can also be used this year if the band members cannot travel to Italy, the EBU confirms. Because of the war, men under the age of 60 have been asked to stay in Ukraine and fight where necessary.

The members of Kalush Orchestra, this year’s Ukrainian entry, hope to travel to Turin for a week, but don’t know where they stand yet.

“The option to do it from here is there, but we don’t really see it as an option. We really hope we can just come,” said rapper Oleh Psiuk, who fronts Kalush Orchestra, in an interview with Afrilatest.

Choice for live on tape is remarkable

It is remarkable that the live on tape has to be made again this year: in most European countries all corona restrictions are now a thing of the past and you can simply travel to concerts, by plane and public transport and into the pub without showing that you are not. are infected or have been vaccinated.

The videos are officially only used if a country drops out due to a corona infection and only if that happens before the first rehearsals:

the entry from Iceland was not live on stage last year due to various infections, but because they could have rehearsed in Ahoy the viewer at home hardly noticed.

Participants must follow several strict rules when recording the videos. For example, each country gets one hour and can record the performance three times during that time. Ultimately, they can choose the best version themselves, but nothing may be changed.

A notary watches during the recordings and members of the EBU also keep an eye on things. The use of virtual reality, confetti, drones and water is prohibited: only what is allowed on stage in Turin is allowed in the video.

S10 has already recorded her video

So it could well be that we will be watching performances from our own country in May. S10, which is participating in De Diepte on behalf of the Netherlands this year, has already recorded its performance, the AVROTROS team informs NU.nl. That happened quite soon after the release of the song.

Naturally, the team hopes it doesn’t have to use the video.

Kalush Orchestra had not seen each other for several weeks during the interview with Afrilatest. Rehearsing is not an option and recording the live on tape is not an option either. It is not clear whether it happened earlier.

In any case, the band participated in the national final in their own country.

According to the rules, however, that performance may not be used: there was still a live audience, and that is not allowed in the live on tape either.
