Although freckles are very common on the face, they can appear anywhere on the body that is exposed to sunlight. Therefore, they require extra care, especially on sunny days, whether in summer or winter. Dermatologist Paola Pomerantzeff, from São Paulo, explains a little better about the subject and gives tips on how to take care of freckles, check it out:

First, let’s understand what they are and how they arise. Freckles are clumps of skin pigment cells. “Freckles (freckles) usually appear in areas that are more exposed to the sun in genetically predisposed people, usually with lighter skin or red hair. But they can also appear in other phototypes, including black skin, although more rare”, says the doctor .

Why do they appear?

“There are cells that produce the pigment that gives rise to skin color. These cells are melanocytes and produce melanin. The freckle appears when there is an excess or accumulation of melanin in the skin”, explains the specialist.. No worries, the doctor clarifies that they are benign, that is, they do not harm the body and organism. “People with freckles, however, are at increased risk for any injury caused by unprotected ultraviolet exposure to skin cancer,” he explains.

Regardless of whether your skin has freckles or not, it is extremely important to take proper care such as cleaning and applying sunscreen before sun exposure and reapplying sunscreen every 2/3 hours.

Freckles, however, do not make the skin sensitive, it just changes the look. “Freckles can multiply in number and ‘join each other’, appearing to be bigger”, complete.

How to care for freckles?

Other characteristics of this skin are more relevant to the presence of acne or dryness. “For freckles, the use of daily sunscreen with a factor greater than 30 is indicated. If it has color, even better, as it also presents a physical barrier due to the pigments.” indicates.

If the person does not like their moles and wants to lighten or reduce them, it is possible. “Each patient must be examined to decide on the best treatment that must be individualized, but we can work from topical treatments, such as creams, to technologies, such as pulsed light”, concludes the doctor.
