Camilla has fond memories of book Black Beauty

Camilla was “crazy about horses as a child”. Anna Sewell’s 1877 classic Black Beauty was the Duchess of Cornwall’s favourite book growing up. “I thought of little else but horses and ponies, so I think Black Beauty was the first book that really stuck.”

Especially the character Ginger, with whom the horse Black Beauty hangs out, impressed her as a child. “Every time I think of that poor, old Ginger hanging out of the cart with his head, I cry.

I think that might have been one of my favourites,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Another favorite of Camilla’s childhood is The Scarlet Pimpernel,by Baroness Orczy from 1905. In the book, Percy Blakeney, known as the Scarlet Pimpernel, saves aristocrats imprisoned from the death penalty at the time of the French Revolution. “He became the great hero in our eyes and I loved all the adventures he had.”

Camilla loves to read. Earlier this year, she founded the Instagram page The Reading Room, which features books and authors.

In the interview with BBC Radio 4, she also encourages others to read. “If you learn to read, no matter how difficult your life is at that moment, you can grab a book and escape for a while. You can laugh, you can cry.

It takes you out of the real world and it gives another dimension to life.”
