Zelensky insists on meeting with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not negotiate an end to the war in his country without a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, he said during an interview with European TV stations.

“As long as we don’t have a meeting with the president of Russia, we can’t really understand what they want to do to stop the war and what they’re willing to do if we’re not ready for compromise,” Zelensky said.

The president of Ukraine has been looking for an opportunity to meet Putin for almost a year, but the Russian leader has always refused.

In turn, Putin is demanding that Zelensky resolve the “civil war” between Ukraine and the breakaway people’s republics that have ties to Moscow.

Since Russian troops invaded Ukraine last month, Zelensky has increasingly called for talks on ending the fighting. Last week, he again insisted on a quick meeting so that Russia can “limit the losses it suffers from its own mistakes”.

“I am prepared to raise the issue of the occupied territories during a meeting with the president of Russia, but I am sure that there will be no solution during this meeting,” he said in the interview.

Zelensky also mentioned the conditions that Russia must meet. “If people try to stop a war, there will be a ceasefire and the troops will be withdrawn.”

“The presidents meet, reach an agreement on the withdrawal of troops and there are security guarantees. Somehow compromises have to be found to ensure our safety.”

According to the president, Ukraine is well aware that it cannot now be admitted to NATO. According to him, NATO member states do not want to fight with Russia. Ukraine must accept this and demand other guarantees, zelensky said.
