Mystery on Edwards Island

In Oxenfree, players take on the role of Alex, a rebellious teenager who finds a group of friends, including a half-brother she’s meeting for the first time, and together they plan a late night party on an old abandoned military island.

The problem is that after a few beers and conflicts between the group’s people, supernatural events begin to happen, and now trapped on the island, Alex and his friends must explore the region and try to unravel the dark secrets of Edwards Island.

If you like series like Stranger Things or Dark, or games like Life is Strange and adventures from Telltale Games, then Oxenfree is made for you. With a strong focus on narrative and character development, the game brings influences from movies and mystery series with teenagers as protagonists.

As is common in this genre of game, in Oxenfree the player has many dialogue options that can influence the development of the story and, mainly, the protagonist’s relationship with the other four people in the group, being able to change the course of everyone’s lives – and determine alternate story endings.

The setting and the engaging story are the highlights, presenting mysteries that instigate the player’s curiosity to follow the unfolding of events.

The personality of the characters and the relationship between them is also another positive point, each one with very different characteristics, which really match the behavior of teenagers, always accompanied by great dialogues and progression.

That brings us to the admirable cast of English voice actors (unfortunately there is no english dub available), made up of professionals who have worked on games such as The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, Borderlands, among others.

All dialogues have dubbing, which helps even more in the immersion of the game, and all characters have great interpretations by their voice actors.

And despite not having dubbing in Portuguese, Oxenfree in its edition for Netflix has subtitles in our language for the first time, which is certainly a big difference from the original game from 2016, which didn’t even have that. The game has a neat look, with beautiful art direction and animations for both the scenarios and the characters, even when seen from a distance, mixing 2D with 3D well. As the game takes place at night, the setting is darker, but the lighting effects manage to create a sinister atmosphere just right on your mobile screen.

I could not fail to comment on the excellent soundtrack, composed by Andrew Rohrmann, better known by the pseudonym scntfc, which features digital music techniques along with the use of recorders and old analog receivers, which perfectly match the atmosphere of the game.

Finally, the game is short, lasting between three and six hours, which can be increased by presenting several alternative endings, thus encouraging the player to revisit the adventure.

Oxenfree: Netflix Edition it is the same game released in 2016, however with the advantage of having subtitles in Portuguese for the first time.
