The climate issue is on the agenda in meetings between Lula and the mayor of Rome and the Italian prime minister

This Wednesday (21), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) together with the mayor of Rome and the Italian Prime Minister discussed issues related to climate and deforestation in the Amazon during meetings in Italy.

In order to meet the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who belongs to the extreme right, Lula went to the seat of the Italian government, known as Palazzo Chigi, located in the center of Rome, earlier this afternoon.

According to information provided by Priscila Yazbek, CNN correspondent, after evaluating sources from the Brazilian government, it ended up discovering that despite the meeting having been proposed about two weeks ago, the invitation was only accepted at the last minute.

Even with the differences of a political nature, according to the evaluation of the Itamaraty, the prime minister’s government was considered pragmatic. Therefore, Meloni is against sending weapons to Ukraine, however, he is in favor of the Ukrainian country joining the European Union.

Due to the fact that he thinks that supplying more weapons to the Ukrainian people could make the situation worse and prolong even more the war that has already been going on for a considerable time, Lula is also opposed to the action.

Official communiqués were not immediately issued by the governments of Italy and Brazil shortly after the closing of the meeting between Lula and Meloni, however, some images taken during the meeting were made available.

Luiz Inácio made a statement to the press at the headquarters of the Commune of Rome, Palazzo Senatorio, after having spoken with Roberto Gualtieri, the current mayor of the Italian capital.

“This here is a thank you visit, to express my gratitude for Gualtieri’s loyalty, solidarity and behavior when I was detained by the Federal Police in my country”, the president revealed.

“Gualtieri was a man who came to visit me, he was a man who talked to many people to show solidarity with my processes”, continued.

The President of the Brazilian Republic also stated that his trip to Italy was only “to put Brazil back at the center of discussions on the climate issue in the world”.

As he said, the agenda in question was always present during the official meetings in which he participated, both with Pope Francis, as well as with the Prime Minister, the Mayor of Rome and the Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

“Brazil is a very important country, it has an energy matrix that is possibly the cleanest in the world, we are committed to zero deforestation in the Amazon by 2030, and these were issues that I discussed with the president, the prime minister and the mayor ”, said last.

Taking into account recent events, a press conference is scheduled for this Thursday (22), within local time.
