European Commission bans Russian state media
The European Commission has banned access to five Russian channels of television network RT and the Sputnik news agency. According to the Commission, these are state media used as Kremlin tools to disseminate Russian propaganda during the war in Ukraine.
The punitive measure was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on Wednesday and is therefore immediately effective.
The punished media are affiliated with the Russian state.
The legal measure applies to transmission and distribution via satellite, cable, online video channels and both new and existing apps.
European Commission bans Russian state media in EU
The national media regulators in each EU Member State are responsible for the implementation and enforcement of the sanction.
For the Netherlands, this is the Media Authority.
Several major tech companies, including Google, Facebook (Meta), Twitter, YouTube and China’s TikTok have already pledged to cooperate with the ban or have taken measures to block RT or Sputnik.
