Illinois drops charges against R. Kelly – Charges of sexual abuse against the already convicted singer R. Kelly have been dropped in the US state of Illinois. Prosecutor Kim Foxx told U.S. media on Monday that the decision has been made because the singer is already serving a long sentence.

The 56-year-old R. Kelly is currently serving a thirty-year prison sentence, after he was convicted in New York last year in an abuse case.

In addition, last fall, a jury in Chicago ruled that he was also guilty of sexual offenses there. In that federal case, the judge will rule on February 23. Kelly, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, could face another ten to ninety years in prison.

The case that is now off the table began in 2019 with a call from Foxx. She asked his victims to come forward. Four black women, three of whom were minors during the alleged crime, told their stories. (Illinois drops charges against R. Kelly)

Foxx acknowledges that the decision to drop the case now for these victims “may be disappointing”. Yet this was chosen because of the “extensive sentence” that Kelly already has to serve anyway and the “limited resources and time” of the prosecutor’s office.

Foxx thanked the victims who had come forward in a press conference on Monday, praising their “courage and striving for justice, no matter how long it took”. She also said their statements helped somewhat in the federal case against Kelly serving in Chicago.
