It snows in Santa Catarina in autumn for the first time in 22 years

A blast of cold air that hit Santa Catarina reduced temperatures in the state. Early this Wednesday night (19), snow fell in the city of Bom Jardim da Serrawhich is more than 1,000 meters above sea level in the Southern Plateau of Santa Catarina.

This is the first record of the phenomenon that occurred in mid-autumn 2023. A rare event for this time of year in Brazil, the last snowfall in this case occurred on April 17, 1999, with a strong mass of polar air accompanied by cyclones. According to MetSul Meteorologyin addition to snow, there will be rain and frost with a temperature of 2ºC.

On Wednesday night, the agency reported the first records of freezing rain in the state. This morning, after analysis, the agency also confirmed light snow in the area.

According to metsulthe snow came this Wednesday with strong gusts of wind, very similar to what happened in July 2021 in the mountain municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.

This Thursday morning, the 20th, started cold in Rio Grande do Sul, mainly in the municipalities of the region of Campos de Cima da Serra, like Vacaria, where during the night it was 3.3ºC with a temperature sensation of -2.1ºC. In São José dos Ausentes the temperature was 4.3ºC and Cambará do Sul 5.3ºC.

The dawn of this Thursday (20) was low expected, with lows close to 3°C in the regions West It is Mountain range. During the day, however, on Friday (January 21), due to the cold air and the absence of clouds, the temperature should drop more with values ​​​​from -1°C to 4°C and frost in high places.
