The main risk factors for the development of the disease are smoking and also passive exposure to tobacco.
Most of the time symptoms don’t appear until the cancer is advanced, but some people with early-stage cancer may show signs.
The most common signs are a persistent cough, bloody sputum, chest pain, hoarseness, worsening shortness of breath, loss of weight and appetite, recurrent pneumonia or bronchitis, fatigue (where you may feel weak or tired).
The treatments that the person can undergo are carried out by a team composed of oncologists, radiotherapists and a thoracic surgeon, where they will decide which will be the best and most appropriate treatment for each situation.
Treatments can be immunotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, chemotherapy and targeted therapy.

Singer Rita Lee passed away on Monday night (8). The biggest Brazilian rock star had been diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2021 and was undergoing treatments against the disease.
Over the years, the survival rate of patients with this type of tumor has changed. In the past, the prognosis for a patient with lung cancer was very poor, only 15% of patients survived for more than 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
According to Inca, only 16% of lung cancers are diagnosed at an early stage.
Regarding treatments, singer Rita Lee underwent immunotherapy and radiotherapy. The therapies can be prescribed in combination or alone.
In April 2022, singer Rita Lee’s cancer reportedly went into remission. Remission is related to the elimination of the disease, but it is not synonymous with cure.
Published in 2013 by the Ministry of Health, the thematic glossary Control of Cancer, states that the correct definition of cancer in remission is the decrease or disappearance of signs or symptoms of cancer, commonly after carrying out the proposed treatment.
