Malicious hackers stole more than 600 million dollars (540 million euros) from Ronin. That blockchain platform is linked to the popular online game Axie Infinity . It is one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts known to date.
The hack took place on March 23, but was only discovered last Tuesday.
Axie Infinity uses cryptocurrency to sell Pokémon-like figures. This allows players to fight against other figures. According to publisher Sky Mavis, the game attracts about 1.7 million players every day.
After the hack it was decided to temporarily stop all transactions. Together with authorities, it is being examined whether 173,000 Ethereum worth about 600 million dollars can be recovered.
The hack took place through a portion of the game that was temporarily set up to handle the sudden increase in player numbers.

According to blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, the hackers got security keys into the hands of a number of individuals who approve transactions.
Ronin looks at where the stolen money might be moved. To this end, it is collaborating with major cryptocurrency trading platforms and market researcher Chainalysis, Ronin said in a blog post .
Experts are calling for a system to be built in to track unauthorized transactions.
In February, a similar theft happened on another blockchain platform. About $300 million in cryptocurrencies was stolen in the process.
