Chinese representative visits Ukraine, meets President Zelensky

China sent, last Tuesday (16), a special envoy to Ukraine, in order to discuss a “Political Solution” for the end of the war against Russia. The Chinese special representative, newly appointed Li Hui, was chosen by the Asian country to meet with high-ranking members of the Ukrainian government, including President Volodymyr Zelensky.

On Wednesday (17), Li met with the head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Dmytro Kouleba, and he explained in detail what was discussed at the meeting. Kouleba told the press that it was “explained in detail the principles of restoring a lasting and just peace based on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.” It was further emphasized that the “Ukraine does not accept any proposal that implies the loss of its territories or the freezing of the conflict.”

The meeting was considered fruitful and it was agreed that they will work together so that the proposals discussed at the meeting are continued in the near future.

Concomitantly with the visit of the Chinese high commissioner, Russia maintained missile attacks against the Ukrainian capital Kyev. According to information from the government of Ukraine, the missiles would have targeted non-residential areas of the capital and that the majority were intercepted by the defense system.

China is considered Russia’s closest partner at the moment, but has never publicly condemned the war. In March, Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a statement in which it was understood that his country supported the Russian invasion, but officially nothing was declared.
