Hair care in the cold months

Winter is a very difficult time to take care of your hair. Cold, dry weather can wreak havoc on your hair, leaving it dry, brittle and lifeless. But don’t worry, there are lots of things you can do to keep your hair healthy during the colder months and we’ve compiled the best tips here.

First, hydration is key. While hydration is key all year round, it is essential and indispensable to keeping your hair healthy during the winter. As the air is drier, hair can easily become dehydrated, so it’s important to keep your hair well hydrated. Use a hydrating conditioner every time you wash your hair, and once or twice a week, make a deep conditioning mask or homemade treatment. If your hair is very dry, consider using a hair oil to help hydrate it and doing a 100% vegetable oil moisturizing routine twice a month.

The next tip is to avoid washing your hair with very hot water. In winter, it can be tempting to take a hot shower, but hot water can damage your hair, leaving it dry and dull. So try to wash your hair with lukewarm water rather than hot water, and if possible, wash your hair less often to avoid stripping your scalp of its natural oils.

Another important and much neglected point is taking care of the wind and the cold. The cold wind can cause damage to the wires, leaving them tangled and brittle and with that opaque appearance. If you have to face the wind, try to tie your hair in a bun or braid it to keep it from being loose and exposed to the wind. Also, wearing a hat or cap might be a good idea if you plan to spend more time out in the cold or wind.

In autumn and winter, we tend to use more dryers, diffusers and dryer brushes. As you are probably tired of knowing, these heat sources overdry the strands and can leave them brittle if used frequently. So, don’t forget to use some thermal protection product before using heat.

Speaking of dry, brittle hair, a great way to improve the appearance of the ends of your hair is to cut them regularly. The important thing is to remember that these cuts on the ends do not make your hair grow, as many thought, but it improves your look a lot, since it does away with those annoying split ends. You can visit a professional salon every two to three months or cut a few “little fingers” to length at home.

Taking care of your hair during the winter can be challenging, but it’s no big deal. Moisturizing your hair, avoiding hot water, protecting your hair from wind and cold, using thermal protection products and cutting your hair ends regularly are some of the things you can do to keep your hair healthy during the colder months. Remember that each hair type is unique and may need special care, but you can easily adapt this to your hair care routine by researching specific care for your hair type.
