“Hunger and despair” Richard Gere recalls difficult times early in his career

Richard Gere (73) became known for starring in the film “American Gigolo” in the year 1980, at the beginning of his career the actor recalls that in New York times were very difficult. In a statement to Paige Six, the actor reveals that eating in restaurants was not a reality for him and that he ate eggs with his meals. “My quick meals were eggs, going out to eat in restaurants was not a reality for me. Those were hard times and despair.” said the actor.

Richard also reports that in New York it was normal to go hungry.

“In New York nobody made money. Unfortunately hunger was something normal” Richard added. “Being hungry was the norm for many people, but especially for actors starting their journey in New York.

That is why this organization is so important to me.” said the actor referring to food charity City Harvest. Richard also reveals that in addition to starving at the time, no actor made money.

“I was starving through the ’70s as an actor, just at the beginning of my career, just trying to make it. I was lucky enough to work, but there weren’t many actors making money back then. I was doing Broadway for the first time. I actually did off-Broadway, then off-off-Broadway.” continued Richard

The Hollywood star also argues that food is a basic human right and that he is happy to help. “Food is a vital need and many are unmet in America. Everything is so expensive now. So I’m happy to help when it comes to people getting a nutritional meal. It is a basic human right.”. Richard concluded, expressing satisfaction in helping people receive nutritional support.
