smart lights – WiZ’s smart lights can do something special after an update: they automatically turn on when they ‘feel’ that you are entering the room. And that without additional sensors. How well does that work?
WiZ’s smart lights
If you have two WiZ lights, you can use the SpaceSense Wi-Fi technique. This makes it possible to detect presence in the event of changes in certain properties of the connection quality. Do you walk into the room? Then that can be seen in the radio waves of the lamps.
Just out of the room for calibration
When activating SpaceSense, you have to point to the lamp that is placed most centrally in a room. This will be the lamp that will emit the control signal. After that, you need to designate the other lamps in the room as receivers.
Then the calibration of SpaceSense begins. You will then be asked to leave the room and start the process. After the calibration, which takes about one minute, you can enter the room again and the lights should jump on immediately.
In the most sensitive mode, SpaceSense is already activated when you move an arm towards your pocket to grab your phone. Only if you sit very still, the lamps will turn themselves off.
Detection works well in practice
In our test setup, the detection with SpaceSense worked very well. We tested two lamps in a room of 4 by 4 meters, similar to a single room. The presence detection worked optimally here in every corner. It was striking that even with the door open, the detection still worked well and was not active too far outside the room.
Occasionally it takes about three seconds before presence is detected. But that also ensures that someone who walks by does not immediately activate the lamps in the room.

In a larger room, more lamps are needed
In addition, we tested SpaceSense in a larger L-shaped living room with an open kitchen. In this setup, it became clearer that SpaceSense is somewhat directional. We used a lamp centrally in the room and one on the side. In addition, movement was not always successfully detected.
After adding a third lamp to the SpaceSense setup, the detection became a lot more precise and was active in the blind spots of the kitchen. A cockatiel present managed to activate the motion detection at the most sensitive position. The animal had not been able to do that from its cage so far with the infrared detectors.
In practice, SpaceSense works just as well as a passive infrared motion sensor. Actually, the technique works even better, since SpaceSense ensures that there are virtually no blind spots in space anymore. For that you actually need more than two lamps in larger rooms.
Almost no impact on power consumption
The energy consumption of the total set-up can throw a spanner in the works. The lamps will never go into a deeper sleep mode. This is because they are constantly working on signal analysis.
Our measurements show that the impact of SpaceSense on total standby consumption is virtually nil. The measurement swells a bit, making reading a bit difficult. But according to our observations, the difference in consumption is about 0.05 watts.
Conclusion
SpaceSense is a good replacement for a passive infrared motion detector. The technique works very well in rooms with many blind spots where you have insufficient coverage with a single classic motion sensor.
If you already have your home filled with Hue, Tradfri or other smart lights, then you will only switch to this WiZ alternative if it really adds something. But SpaceSense may be able to give the final push to do this anyway.
