After another setback, Alex de Souza is dismissed from Avai

The trajectory of former player and now coach Alex de Souza as coach of Avaí Futebol Clube came to an end yesterday (03) after yet another setback for the club from Santa Catarina: Alex couldn’t resist the defeat at home against Vila Nova, where Leão lost by 3 to 0.

Shortly after the end of the game played in Ressacada, the club’s president, Júlio Heerdt (alongside vice-president Bruno Comicholi), went to the press conference and informed about the professional’s dismissal:

Today Alex is not coming to the press conference, there is no interview. We reached a common agreement and ended the work of the professional here in Avai. We are going to work hard to reverse this result and we are looking for a new coach. I want to thank Alex de Souza, PC Oliveira and João Paulo Cavalcanti for the work they did and I wish them success in their new projects.

Still starting his career as a professional coach, Alex arrived at the Santa Catarina club in early December 2022 with the premise of achieving great things for the traditional blue and white team, which ended up not materializing in 2023 so far. Despite the project being promising, on the field Avaí coached by Alex did little: an early elimination in the local state (against Criciúma in the quarterfinals) and also in the Copa do Brasil (for Retrô, in the first phase of the tournament). In Serie B so far, the performance is also well below expectations, considering that the Azurra club won only one of the four disputed and occupies the modest 16th place.

Altogether, Alex de Souza was in command of Avai in 18 matches, with a performance of six wins, four draws and eight defeats (totaling 40% of success). There were 22 goals scored and 25 conceded by the team during the period in which the former São Paulo under-20 coach was leading the team from Santa Catarina throughout 2023.
