O Rei do Gado: Marcos revolts before the trial

In “O Rei do Gado”, a soap opera that is being rerun by Rede Globo, the day of Marcos’ judgment arrives (Fábio Assunção), who is accused of Ralf’s murder (Oscar Magrini).

In the chapter of Wednesday, May 24, moments before the judgment, Walfrido (Hélio Cícero) states that the boy must tell the truth about Leia (Silvia Pfeifer), without sparing it. Marcos revolts and the lawyer says that it will be impossible to defend him.

Marcos gets angry with Léia, who stays in the guest room, as she was being harassed by journalists. Dimas tells Bruno that there are reporters at the door wanting to talk to him. Marcos arrives at the court accompanied by Walfrido and surrounded by journalists. Gradually, the prosecutor, Suzane, Bruno, Lia, Clóvis, Marita arrives… they all settle down in the courtroom, waiting for the trial to begin. Marcos says he had no idea that the tide would reach Ralf and agrees that Ralf was his mother’s lover. Geraldino testifies. Luana, Julia and Dimas follow the trial via radio. Clovis enters to testify. Clóvis explains the facts to the judge, the dramas between Ralf and Leia, Ralf’s greed, etc. Clóvis then responds to the prosecution’s questions. Clóvis says that she witnessed Geraldino and Marcos assuming responsibility for the crime, without coercion. Giuseppe and Geremias comment on the trial. Judite and Geremias exchange affectionate glances. Walfrido interrogates Clóvis and the prosecutor gets angry. Clovis confirms that she heard death threats to Ralf from Orestes. The session goes into recess.

“O Rei do Gado” is a Brazilian telenovela produced by TV Globo. It aired from June 17, 1996 to February 14, 1997, replacing “The End of the World”. It was written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa, with the collaboration of Edmara Barbosa and Edilene Barbosa, with general direction by Luiz Fernando Carvalho. It had the participation of Antônio Fagundes, Patrícia Pillar, Raul Cortez, Glória Pires, Fábio Assunção, Silvia Pfeifer, Carlos Vereza and Stênio Garcia.

Judite tells Geremias that she feels sorry for Marcos. Bruno and Lia fear Marcos’ reaction when Léia testifies. The judge calls the first defense witness. Marita reveals that Ralf was her civil and religious husband and says that she is not sure if he is dead. Julia and Dimas echo the judgment. Marita is questioned by the prosecution. Suzane enters to testify. Geremias plans to buy the farm that belonged to her father. Luana goes to sleep while Dimas and Julia continue to listen to the radio. Walfrido interrogates Suzane. She tells how everything happened on the eve of Ralf’s death. Walfrido asks if Suzane suspected that Orestes’ intention was to kill Ralf. The prosecution protests claiming that the defendants are confessed. Suzane says that Ralf was passed out and thought he was dead or that he would drown since he was right in the surf. The court goes into recess. Bruno sings victory. Walfrido and Mario celebrate the outcome of the trial, but they fear that Léia could ruin everything. Dimas and Julia deliberate on the case. Leia is called to testify. Walfrido asks that Léia be dismissed, but the prosecution does not accept it and asks why Léia did not recognize the body in the IML, the chain and invented the connection from Uruguay. The prosecutor suggests that Léia wanted to protect her murderous son by declaring Ralf indigent. Walfrido scolds the prosecutor for already condemning Marcos, a role that falls to the jury. Léia says that she hid from Marcos and Bruno that Ralf beat her. Marcos is upset and cries out that he was the one who killed Ralf.

Friday, May 26th

The journalist announces that the court has recessed. Marcos apologizes to the family for the lack of control. Lawyers Walfrido and Mario think about how to reverse Marcos’ access in their favor. Donana prays and Luana tells Zé the news of the trial. The prosecutor makes his final arguments asking the jury to condemn Marcos and Geraldino for having killed the victim, unable to defend himself, with touches of cruelty. Walfrido makes his final arguments. The jurors leave with the judge. All distressed in Mezenga’s house. The judge reads the sentence, which acquits Marcos and Geraldino of the crime of homicide, but sentences them to 1 year for the crime of vilifying a corpse. However, as the defendants have no criminal record, they can serve their sentence in freedom. Marcos and Léia embrace. Bruno and Marcos arrive at Araguaia and celebrate. Liliana breathes relieved by Marcos’ acquittal. Rosa says that someone will have dinner with them. Bruno tells Marcos that the time has come for him to take over the business, as he will never deal with cattle again. And that he is going to buy the farm that belonged to his grandfather, Antônio Mezenga. Giuseppe tells his uncle that he is not ready to take care of everything. Judite talks about buying the farm and Geremias says they are going to Italy. Luana says that Bruno is thinking of going to the farm in person. Donana and Zé wonder if Bruno is really going to stop dealing with cattle. Geremias sends the broker to buy the farm that belonged to the Mezenga while the owner of the one that belonged to the Berdinazzi does not bend.
