President Lula arrives in Portugal, agenda includes agreements and ceremonies

The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) arrived in Portugal this Friday morning (21), in an early departure for the Europe. During the trip, Lula will follow a schedule of official commitments, which involves participation in the bilateral summit, with the Portuguese prime minister António Costa and the president from the country Marcelo Rebelo. In addition to meetings with leaders, he will also deliver the Camões Award to the singer Chico Buarque.

It is the first time that President Lula has visited the European continent since he took over his third term. The official visit raises expectations about the Brazil-Europe relationship, shortly after the president had negative repercussions for his declaration on the war in Ukraine, in which he attributed the prolonging of the war to the USA and the European Union, while Portugal — a member of the — publicly supports the country invaded by Russia. Of the agreements that must be made official, the production of the Super Tucano fighter plane is also included, in a partnership between embraer and Portuguese Ogma. Upon confirming the news, the minister Luciana Santos (Science and technology) considered the initiative strategic, according to CNN publication: “Embraer is a private company, it used to be a state-owned company. It is a strategic partnership because Embraer is a Brazilian asset. It was a large state-owned company that made it possible for us to be the third largest producer of aircraft, whether defense or commercial, in the world” stated.

Singer Chico Buarque de Holanda will finally receive a literary award from a Brazilian president that praises literature in the Portuguese language. The Camões Prize was awarded to Chico in 2019 and since then he had not received the honor due to political motivation — at the time, former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) refused to sign the concession — and, later, due to social isolation during the critical period of the pandemic. The ceremony is scheduled for Monday (24).
