In addition, the award had more reason to become historic: Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee became the first openly non-binary actors to win a Tony. Newell received the award for his performance as the character Lulu in the musical “shucked”, while Ghee received the award for his performance with Jerry/Daphne in the musical “Some Like it Hot”.

Another notable fact of the awards is that it was completely improvised. A WGA, Writers Guild of America (Screenwriters League of America) declined to write for the ceremony (which needs a script) because of the writers’ strike, which has been going on since May. This opened space for the organization of the event to seek a solution in improvisation. Ariana DeBose hosted the event and started the awards with a dance performance and took a stand in favor of the writers.

In addition to Newell and J. Harrison Ghee, actors Victoria Clark (best lead actress in a musical) were awarded for the musical “Kimberly Akimbo”; and Sean Hayes (Best Lead Actor in a Play), for “Good Night, Oscar”. The best play award went to “leopoldstadt”, by director Tom Stoppard.
