Haaland scores again to break Premier League goal record with 20 clubs

After scoring Manchester City’s fourth goal in the 4-1 defeat of Arsenal, in a direct confrontation for the 2022/23 Premier League title dispute, Erling Haaland isolated himself as the top scorer of a single edition of the new era of the English Championship with 38 rounds.

In yesterday’s game (26th), at the Etihad Stadium, the Norwegian striker reached 33 goals scored in this edition of the English league and, in addition to registering the unprecedented mark since the tournament is disputed by 20 clubs – something that happens since 1995 -, Haaland is one goal away from equaling the competition’s overall record.

In 1993/94, Newcastle striker Andy Cole scored 34 league goals. The following season, in 1994/95, Alan Shearer, legend of English football, repeated the feat when he played for Blackburn. In the first three editions of the Premier League, the tournament was contested by 22 clubs that played 42 rounds in total.

Still in relation to the historic artillery of a single edition of the league since the English Championship was played – the first took place in 1888, 135 years ago –, the record number seems unattainable: Dixie Dean, Everton player, scored an impressive 60 goals in 1927 /28.

In addition to the domestic league, Haaland also registers other impressive achievements in his first season for Manchester City: there are 49 goals in 43 appearances overall in all competitions, which represents the highest mark in the history of the club and of any player among those who compete in the Premier League.

For the English Championship, the top scorer will have seven more games to establish and expand his numbers. In addition to the duel against Fulham, in London, Manchester City will have the following sequence until the end of the dispute: West Ham (home), Leeds (home), Everton (away), Chelsea (home), Brighton (away) and Brentford (outside).
