Vanderley Luxemburgo returns to direct Corinthians in the 2023 season

Luxemburgo assumes his third cycle, in charge of football at Corinthians. It is the third coach change, in 2023, that Timão’s board performs. Before Cuca’s lightning request for dismissal, worn out by off-field news, of the accusation of rape of a 14-year-old girl, in Switzerland, in 1987 and before, an attempt to hire the interim Fernando Lázaro, the alvinegro from Itaquera decided not to risk it and relied on experience. His two previous passages, in 1998 and 2001, were victorious, with the conquests of the Brasileirão and the São Paulo championship. The coach had been absent from the fields since 2021 when taking charge of Cruzeiro. Behind the scenes, the information was that Luxembourg was the third option. President Duílio, at the end of the week, received a new refusal from the favorite of Timão’s board, the former coach of the national team, Tite.

His start as a coach was at Campo Grande, in Rio de Janeiro. Luxa has a degree in physical education and soon moved to Rio Branco, where he won his first title, in the 1983 Capixaba Championship. Six years later, in charge of Bragantino, he won the title of Série B and the following year, took the modest club from Bragança, to the feat of winning Paulistão in 1990. A title that raised the coach to the status of commanding great clubs, at the beginning of that decade. Upon transferring to football in Rio de Janeiro, he won the 1991 Copa Rio.

He was the main highlight of Palmeiras, in 1993, in the so-called Parmalat era, an allusion to the sponsor at the time. That year, he took Verdão out of a 16-year streak of titles, by beating Paulistão that year, thrashing arch-rivals Corinthians in an electrifying final, 4X0. He then won the Rio São Paulo Tournament and the Brazilian Championship, ending a period of great Palmeiras achievements. In the year following the Tetra do Brasil conquest, in the 1994 United States World Cup, Luxemburgo would still take the São Paulo alviverde to the double of Paulistão and Brasileiro. On lawns in São Paulo, he would still manage Santos and Corinthians. In 2000, he had a troubled passage through the national team, marked by off-field scandals, such as tax evasion and the use of false documentation. The defeat at the Olympics that year, in the quarterfinals, to Cameroon, made his permanence unsustainable.

Among good passages through national clubs, Luxemburgo managed Real Madrid for a year, with a performance still considered bad, in the period from 2004 to 2005. Luxemburgo is from Rio de Janeiro, Nova Iguaçu and next week he will complete 71 years of age.
